10.03.17. Google updated Drive with a focus on its business users. Google introduced several updates to its online file storage service Google Drive, which all aim to make it more useful for the company’s business and enterprise users. To better support the enterprise, though, Google is mostly focusing on making Drive a better service for teams. That means Team Drives, Google’s solution for enterprise file sharing that launched in preview last year, is now generally available, for example. During the preview, which lasted about six months, the team identified a number of issues, especially around permissions, that it needed to fix ahead of a general launch, and it’s now ready to open the project up to all businesses. Also generally available now is Google Vault for Drive, which offers tools to support the archiving and data retention needs of large enterprises, especially in regulated industries.

21.09.16. Google Drive gets intelligent search. Google Drive is getting a new search that understands natural language and can autocorrect your search query by suggesting corrections to misspelled search terms. For example, you can search your documents by saying things like “find my budget spreadsheet from last December” or “show me presentations from Anissa”. The feature will improve over time, too, so the results will become more accurate with more frequent use. The new feature probably means that soon Google also will add voice interface to Google Drive.

18.12.14. Google Drive adds OpenDocument support, sending files as attachments. Google is rolling out a series of updates for its cloud-based storage service Google Drive. Gmail users will now be able to share Drive documents as attachments that are sent as part of email files. That’s useful in case the person receiving the document doesn’t have permission to view the file in Google Drive or if you delete the file from Drive at a later time. Google also added support for importing all three major ODF (Open) file formats: .odt files for documents, .ods for spreadsheets, and .odp for presentations. That change will make it easier for users to work with files from other open source productivity suites such as LibreOffice. On Android, Drive users will also be able to search for files using voice commands within the Google search app. A user could say, “OK, Google — search for holiday letter on Drive,” for instance.

06.11.14. Google Drive for desktop now allows to launch files in preferred applications. File storage service Google Drive now allows users to more easily launch the files they have saved in the cloud using their preferred desktop applications. The feature is available as an optional Chrome extension. Once installed, users will be able to right-click on applications stored in Google Drive and open them using a compatible application on their computer. Users must also have the latest version of the Drive app for Mac or PC installed and their files synced to the computer in order for the extension to work. Google says the new extension is rolling out over the next several days.

26.06.14. Google launched Drive for Work with unlimited storage. On Monday Microsoft tried to surprise the public having doubled the free and paid cloud storage limits in OneDrive. But Google made it more effective. Google released the enterprise version of its file storage and sync tool Google Drive for Work, which for $10/month provides UNLIMITED cloud storage. And to make a little more fun of the competitors, Google increased the maximum file size to 5 TERABITES (of course, if you find such a file somewhere). In addition, the business version of Drive meets the enterprise security requirements and provides every file encryption, logging every file access, 99.9% availability. Also it added  Office Compatibility mode which allows you to edit MS Office documents in their native format. Google Drive for Work is included in the Google Apps suite, so if you pay for it - you get the other apps (GMail, Hangouts, Sites ...) for free.

10.06.14. Apple iCloud to get folders with files, Windows app. Cloud file storage and sync service iCloud is not loved even by Apple fanboys. Because first, it can only sync the internal app files so that user can't access them outside these apps. Second, it's expensive ($20 for 20GB) - this price that only Dropbox can afford. Third, it only works on Apple devices (and yes, even Apple fanboys are tied of this closed garden). So Apple has introduced the service update, which is now called iCloud Drive, which works more like Dropbox - it allows you to sync any folders with any files. Moreover, additionally to Mac and iOS apps it will provide client for Windows. And the pricing will be reduced - from $0.99/month for 20 GB. The free volume won't charge - 5 GB. All this will become available this fall with the release of new iOS 8 and OSX Yosemite.

17.03.14. Google Drive gets a Big price drop. Google (for some reason) decided not to play the game "We are slightly reducing cloud pricing AGAIN" and slashed Google Drive fees down to the bottom. Now the service offers the free plan 15GB and 100GB cost only $1.99/month (previously the price was $4.99). And if you need as much as 1TB, it will cost you $9.99/month (previously was $49.99). New Google Drive pricing is significantly lower than the competitors offer. The closest rival - Microsoft, which also recently reduced OneDrive prices. OneDrive provides 7GB for free, and 100 GB cost $4.1/month. Not to mention such services as Box and Dropbox, which prices are higher in 3-5 times.

15.01.14. Google Drive adds activity feeds. Google still doesn't want to add social intranet to its office suite - hopes that we'll use Google+ for this purpose. But at least they add social tools to existing services. Today the cloud file storage Google Drive gets activity feeds, that allows to track the actions of your colleagues by project or by specific file. It works like this: you open the folder and press the "I" button - the right panel shows the activity feed for this folder with such actions as moving and deleting files, renaming, uploading, sharing, adding comments. If you want to see the log by specific files - just select them in the list. The new feature will appear in all accounts during the week.

2013. GMail doesn't want you to download attachments. Before now IT vendors struggled for the environment ecology - persuaded companies to use electronic documents instead of paper. Now that most of the documents are electronic - it's time to struggle for the ecology of computer networks. Indeed, the huge amounts of traffic (data transmitted back and forth), multiple copies of the same documents in different places - becomes an ecological problem. The new appeal of IT- companies goes something like this: "Documents should be created in the Cloud, stored in the Cloud, viewed, edited and approved in the Cloud". When you download a document from the Internet to your computer - you chop wood and kill a beaver. That's how Google developers think. Today they have added another new feature in GMail - the ability to save attachments (files , documents) from the received messages directly to your online storage in Google Drive. Early GMail also added the ability to attach files to outgoing messages directly from the online Drive, so you don't need to download and upload documents to your email and back any more.

2013. Apple launches iWork for iCloud. Historically Apple doesn't like to build business applications, but Office - is still an important part of the platform and competitors (Microsoft and Google) got far ahead in this aspect. So Apple decided to fix, perhaps, the main drawback of its office suite - the absence of online version. In June, at the WWDC conference Apple officially introduced iWork for iCloud and now the online apps Pages, Numbers and Keynote are available to all in the iCloud online accounts (in beta). However, at the moment, these editors can only bring a smile for MS Office and Google Docs users. For example, the text editor Pages even doesn't allow to add tables and spell check works only in English. There are no collaboration tools. But the good news is that you can upload and edit MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint documents (and formatting sometimes isn't corrupted) and download documents in MS Office formats and PDF.

2013. Real-time collaboration in Google Forms. Google added multiuser real-time collaboration to its online forms editor Google Forms. This feature is already available in all other Google office apps: Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets, Google Presentations and Google Drawings. Now, when creating a form, you can invite one or more co-workers, control who is currently helping you to build the form, what field he is editing (each user has different color), communicate in chat and comments. In general, after the recent update Google Forms turned into the world's best tool for conducting employee or customer surveys. It allows to add any any kind of fields (text, checkboxes, radio-buttons, lists, tables ...), select a template, embed form to your site, collect the entered data into a spreadsheet or view it on a graphical report.

2012. Google adds free QuickOffice to Google Apps, improves MS Office documents conversion. We all hope that since Google removed free version from Google Apps, the development of this office suite will become more active. For example, it will get the full-featured mobile version. As you know, in June, Google bought the best mobile office QuickOffice. And only after 6 months (!) it started to tie it somehow to Google Apps. The free version of QuickOffice for iPad (including text processor, spreadsheets and presentations) is now available to paid Google Apps users. The versions for iPhone and Android will be also available soon. QuickOffice for Google Apps unlike the regular version of QuickOffice can save your documents to Google Drive. Why QuickOffice is better than Google's own Google Docs, that already work on iOS and Android?

2012. Google Drive for iOS now can edit documents. In July, when Google released a mobile client Google Drive for iOS, users were disappointed by the lack of ability to edit documents on iPhone/iPad. Today, Google has fixed this drawback, but with some limitations. Editing (including real-time collaboration editing) is available only for text documents. Though the video shows that spreadsheets can also be edited, in fact, it's just a special effect. Editing spreadsheets will appear later. Besides, Google added the ability to view presentations, create new folders and move files between folders. Google Drive for Android app has been also updated today. It now also features the ability to create folders, move files and add comments to files and documents.

2012. Zoho will work on top of the Google Drive. Looks like guys from Zoho are not going to create their own file storage and syncing service. Instead, they will use the product of their "friends" from Google - Google Drive. Yesterday, Zoho has launched the integration of its office suite (Writer, Sheet and Show) with Google Drive, which lets you open documents stored on Google Drive in these online Zoho apps. You just need to install Zoho editors from the Chrome Web Store, and then the integration will be enabled not only in Chrome, but in all other browsers. This integration demonstrates the potential of Google Drive as a cloud storage for third-party apps. Various project management systems, CRM, intranet solutions can use Google Drive as an external storage, which also enables file access on any mobile platform. And the third-party developers can be assured in Google's decency, because even competing Zoho apps passed the moderation.

2012. Google Chrome and Google Drive come to iPhone/iPad. Remember how it was on Windows? First, Google released the browser - Google Chrome. Then it quietly turned the browser into the operating system and now, it like a cancer is trying to replace Windows by itself. The same thing happened on Mac OS. Recently Chrome also has become the default browser on Android. And few days ago Google (saying that Chrome is already the most popular browser in the world) has launched Chrome for iOS. However, Google's plan to replace all the operating systems by the Chrome can be broken by the Apple's mobile platform. The fact is that Apple has limited the capabilities of third-party browsers on the iOS beforehand. In fact, all third-party browsers on iPhone/iPad can work only as add-ons to the native browser Safari (using its secure Javascript-engine). In result - they work 2 times slower than Safari. Also, Safari is the default browser on iOS and it can't be replaced.

2012. Google launched Google Drive. After (just) six years after the first rumors appeared Google has launched the legendary file storage service Google Drive. And the first question is: why they created Google Drive as a separate service, when Google Docs is de-facto Google's online storage that can store any files? There is a couple of reasons. First, such file storage and sharing services (Dropbox and clones) is a very hot topic either in consumer or enterprise space. And the attention that Google can attract with the new app in this space is not a bad thing for the search giant. Second, Google Drive will serve as a file system not only for Google Docs, but also for other Google's services that operate files (GMail, Google +, Google Sites, Picasa ...).

2011. Apple iCloud delighted SaaS vendors. As you probably know, on Monday, Steve Jobs once again climbed on the stage to introduce another revolutionary thing. And at this time the thing was not small and metallic, but big and virtual - iCloud - the new center of Apple's strategy. In general, for us (from the enterprise point of view) this iCloud - is not very interesting. It allows you to sync all your content and apps across all your Apple-devices (iPad, iPhone, Mac). I.e. iCloud can only help to improve personal productivity. However, the emergence of iCloud caused delighted reaction among SaaS-vendors (, Zoho, Salesforce). First, they seem to be happy that iCloud won't compete with them. iCloud works only with Apple-devices and provides no collaborative features. But at the same time, iCloud marks the global shift from the desktop (or any device) to the Cloud. If Steve Jobs at his own says that the center is no longer in the iPhone or in the iPad, but in the cloud, then people will believe in it. And enterprises are ruled by the same people.
